Cellular mobile telephone subscribers outnumber
fixed line telephone subscribers by 15 to 1

In 2007, the total number of cellular mobile telephone (CMT) subscribers was estimated at 57.3 million, almost 15 times more than the number of fixed line telephone subscribers estimated at 3.9 million. Data from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) also show that CMT subscription started to outnumber fixed line subscription in 2000 when it registered a ratio of 2 to 1.
The 2007 level of CMT subscribers is 57.3% higher compared to its 2006 level of 42.9 million while the number of fixed line telephone subscribers only grew by 3.9% from 3.6 million in 2006.
For the period 2000 to 2007, the number of CMT subscribers continuously increased at an annual average growth rate of 31.4% while that of fixed telephones only increased at 3.2%.
NTC data further reveal that in 2007, CMT density was estimated at 65.93 per 100,000 population and fixed line telephone density in the country was estimated at 8.24 per 100,000 population.

Among the regions in the country, the National Capital Region has the highest fixed line telephone density at 29.53 per 100,000 population followed by Region IV1 (Southern Tagalog) and Region VII (Central Visayas) at 7.77 and 7.52, respectively in 2007. Meanwhile, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has the lowest at 0.81.
Among the provinces in 2007, Agusan del Norte posted the highest telephone density at 12.19 followed by Cavite and Benguet with telephone densities of 11.15 and 10.66, respectively. On the other hand, the province of Sulu had the lowest telephone density at 0.05 per 100,000 population.
Both indicators on telephone lines per 100,000 population and cellular subscribers per 100 population are Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) indicators under Goal 8. In the Philippines, both indicators show an increasing trend since 1994 implying that the MDG target of making available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications in cooperation with the private sector, will be achieved by the Philippines by 2015.

WHY I THINK BARACK OBAMA IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR FILIPINOS

I've spent the past few weeks criss-crossing the country talking to
AAPIs about Barack Obama and the vision he has for our community, and
for our country. I want to say a quick word about where we are in
this campaign to Filipinos.
Filipino Americans across the country are working nationwide through
the Obama campaign and Filipino Americans for Obama. Leading to
November 4th, they are working diligently to deliver the electoral
votes that will make Barack Obama our 44th President of the United
States. This is because Filipino Americans, young and old, all
recognize the challenges America faces, after all they impact our
lives every day. Our economy is in crisis, thanks in large part to the
Wall Street-first economic policies pushed through by President Bush.
Our nation is in an endless war; our veterans are not receiving the
care they deserve; and our health care system is broken. We need to
call upon the can do American spirit to lift ourselves out of this
precarious situation.
In many ways the Filipino-American community's experience embodies
this American spirit. Barack Obama has shared the same experience. He
understands keeping the American dream alive, and he knows that
government must keep its promise to you and all of the American
people. This is one of the core reasons why I believe that Barack
Obama is THE right candidate for Filipino-Americans.
Barack first became acquainted with the diversity and richness of Asia
and the AAPI community as a child growing up in Hawai'i. Members of
his family are of Asian descent and ours is a community that he became
a part of while living in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. The AAPI
story and community are personal to him, and he is committed to
keeping the door of opportunity open to Filipino Americans and
expanding opportunities for all Americans. Senator Obama understands
the Asian American and Pacific Islander community and the critical
role that we play in this nation.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden are committed to policies that will help
the Filipino American community succeed.
For instance, many Filipino families rely on family reunification
policies to help them build better lives in the United States.
However, AAPI families have some of the longest immigration backlogs.
That's why Barack has fought to improve and pass a comprehensive
immigration bill. He has put greater emphasis on keeping immigrant
families together. The Philippines and the United States have always
enjoyed a special relationship, and I assure you that Barack Obama and
Joe Biden are committed to building on our strong ties.
As we saw so clearly during the first debate, it's a choice of the
past versus the future. Barack Obama demonstrated the vision and
judgment to be Commander in Chief. He'll change the failed policies
of the last 8 years, and pursue 21st Century policies in Iraq,
Afghanistan, and in reinvigorating our alliances.
And on the homefront, again as seen during the debate, Barack Obama
demonstrated he'll be a fierce advocate for the middle class, and
offer the change we need on the economy, health care, and energy
independence.
Kababayan, we can create the changes we seek in America. But this
will only happen if ordinary people rise up to demand change. Just as
some of you participated in the people power movement in Edsa, I'm
also asking you to get involved NOW, and to encourage your families to
look at the candidates, come to an informed decision, and vote.
The reason is simple: the Filipino American community deserves better.
We want fundamental change in our country. We want to turn the page
on the failed policies of the past eight years and renew the promise
of America. We simply cannot afford a third Bush term. And let's be
clear. That is exactly what we'd get with John McCain.
As Senator Clinton says- No Way, No How, No McCain, No Palin. I know
there were many in our community who supported Senator Clinton in this
year's elections and I want to say a word to you. Senator Clinton is
someone I admire tremendously. I am a proud "Clintonista" who worked
in the Clinton administration for the first White House Initiative on
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. If you love Hillary, if you
believe in her, if you trust her leadership and if you gave her your
vote, then I ask you to do the one thing that she has asked of all of
us now: do everything you can to elect Barack Obama as the next
President of the United States.
The stakes are too high and the price of apathy is too great this year
to give anything but our all.
You know, there's been a lot of talk this year about making history.
And I believe making history is an important goal. But the more
important opportunity we have in November is to make possibility
reality.
Next year, school children all over America will sit in classrooms
looking up at the portraits of the American presidents on the wall.
After scanning past the first 43, I hope they'll take a good look at
number 44 because that one will look different. And suddenly, our
kids will start to think, "Maybe I can be Mayor. Maybe I can run for
Congress. Maybe I could be President." In that moment, possibility
is born.
I want a generation of Filipino boys and girls to see Barack Obama and
know that in America, anything is possible - with faith, hard work,
and determination, they can achieve anything in this land of
opportunity. That, after all, is the American dream of our lolos and
lolas. Stand with me today and let it be the commitment we make to
the generation of Filipino Americans who follow us.
No doubt, there will be some who say it's too hard. They will say
that Barack Obama and our movement for change just can't win. But I'm
here to tell you: kaya natin, yes we can!
For generations, that's what we Pinoys have taught this nation. KAYA NATIN!
When we were told that Filipino immigrants could never be at home in
these United States, we said kaya natin.
During WWII, when America was at war and soldiers were needed, our
brave Filipino veterans said kaya natin.
When farmworkers were told they could not organize, Filipino laborers
joined Cesar Chavez and other union leaders and said kaya natin.
When this country could not find enough doctors and nurses, the
Filipino community stepped up and said kaya natin.
As our families struggle with the longest immigration backlogs and
living in this frail economy, Barack Obama joins with the Filipino
community to say kaya natin.
So, we cannot wake up on November 5th wishing we had done more and we
can't afford to let someone else decide for us. We all know that this
is going to be a very close race. A handful of votes may decide the
election. Those handful of votes could be yours.
Change doesn't come by hoping for it. It doesn't come by wishing for
it. We have to organize for it, fight for it, register for it and
vote for it. Change happens when we say, with great pride in our
community and love for our country, kaya natin!

Dear Friends and Family,
We are extremely thrilled to write to you about the upcoming release of our movie PING PONG PLAYA beginning September 5th! It's an exciting time--but here's where we need your help. We'll let the movie speak for itself, but we need your help to spread the word about the release of the movie. Independent movies don't have the marketing budget to compete against the mammoth studio movies, but what we do have is intense, strong word-of-mouth (just check out any of a number of our reviews--from outlets large and small, from critics, bloggers, and chat room posters alike).

FILIPINA IMMIGRANT WORKER SUES FORMER UNITED NATIONS AMBASSADOR FROM THE PHILIPPINES FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING VIOLATIONS
New York, NY � The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) announced that it has filed a complaint in New York federal court on behalf of a Filipina immigrant worker against a former United Nations ambassador from the Philippines, his family, and his wife�s travel agency, for violating federal laws against human trafficking.
At the press conference today, Marichu Suarez Baoanan, a citizen from the Philippines, described how she paid $5,000 to the Bajas and Labaire International Travel, in return for transportation, a visa, a work permit, and job placement services in the United States. Ms. Baoanan arrived in New York in early 2006, believing that she would receive assistance to find employment as a nurse. Instead, former UN ambassador Lauro Baja, Jr., his wife Norma Baja (an owner of Labaire International Travel), and the Bajas� adult daughter, Maria Elizabeth Facundo, alleged a substantial debt against Ms. Baoanan and subjected her for three months to involuntary servitude, forced labor, peonage, debt bondage, and slavery as a domestic worker in their home on Manhattan�s Upper East Side.
�Human trafficking is far more complex than many people realize,� said AALDEF Staff Attorney Ivy Suriyopas, who leads the Anti-Trafficking Initiative. �It can involve domestic workers that cook food for, clean the house of, and take care of the children of your next-door neighbor. Trafficking involves the severe exploitation of workers regardless of the industry of the worker or the reputation of the trafficker.�
Under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), individuals can sue their former traffickers and also legalize their immigration status. "T" visas are available to sex and labor trafficking survivors who have been subjected to force, fraud, or coercion.
Ms. Baoanan sought assistance in 2006 from DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association, a Filipino labor rights group, and lawyers at AALDEF. AALDEF helped to secure a T visa for Ms. Baoanan and Derivative T visas for her family members, with case management assistance provided by New York Association for New Americans (NYANA). Ms. Baoanan was reunited with her family in April 2008.
�It is an honor to work with AALDEF on behalf of Ms. Baoanan and other women and youth like her to meet the humanitarian needs of trafficking victims and their families, and to preserve the rule of law and the values that we cherish in our lives and our society,� said Aaron Mendelsohn, an associate at Troutman Sanders LLP in New York, the law firm which is serving as pro bono co-counsel on this case.
AALDEF�s Anti-Trafficking Initiative provides free legal representation to trafficked women and youth to apply for immigration relief, facilitate survivors� access to human services, and represent them in civil litigation. AALDEF�s anti-trafficking efforts also include community education, outreach, and advocacy.

Why… PhotoBen750?

| This is just the beginning… For many of you my passion for photography may be new to you, but I have been in love with the camera for the longest time. Growing up I would usually prefer to be the one taking the pictures rather than having my picture taken. |
| As a young child I did not have much money so I was limited to basic bottom barrel point and shoots and disposable |
| cameras. Not having much money this also made the process of getting my picture developed difficult. For many years I just kept the spent film in hopes that one day, before it went bad that, I would get it developed. |
| A major turning point in my life that sent me down this road of photo passion was the day my uncle Dennis Baunach gave me his old Pentax K1000. This was around the end of my sophomore |
|
| year in high school just before we took a family trip to Europe. At that time I did not realize what importance this camera might play in the development of my talent. Even though my uncle had owned this camera for about 25 years prior to him giving it to me the Pentax K1000 is a classic camera that is still used by many photogs. |
| The Pentax was my first real SLR camera. It had all the manual features a beginner could want and a few auto function that |
| were new back when the camera was originally purchased. It came with a black leather caring case designed to hold the camera, film, filter, lenses, flash, and a battery operated auto shooter. Back then I had little knowledge on how any of it worked or what it meant to adjust shutter and aperture settings. |
| To get me started my uncle showed me how to read the built in light meter, focus the camera and basic adjustment to the shutter and |
|
| aperture. Off I went to discover the world through its glass eye interpretation. |
| I would go to all kinds of places taking picture of just about anything. I even got into taking black and white images with the Kodak Tmax film. At the time black and white was not easy for me to get developed. Unless you knew how to it yourself you had |
| to find a shop that worked with black and white. You couldn’t just drop it off at Costco or any old photo store and it was also twice as expensive to develop. I would often just take the pictures and keep the |
| undeveloped film. |
| For years I continued taking pictures some film would get developed but most would just get added to the collection. In 1999 when I was preparing to move to California Anselmo Villinueva, a good friend of mine, discover that I had all this undeveloped film saved up. He said that I should think about getting it developed before it goes bad. I told him that I could not really afford to do it, but I really wanted to see what picture I had taken. |
| He offered to drop it off to Costco for me and pay for the development. I could not believe it. There were over 20 roles of film. This was a good chunk of change that I will forever be thankful |
|
| for. Once they were developed I began to see all the moments from the past come to life. It was like opening a time capsule. The subject matter was so varied and spanned over many, many years. It brought back lots of great memories. |
| Many of the pictures were poor in quality and not as nice as I would have hoped, but the real excitement came when I would find the outstanding |
| shots. I did not know much about photography when I started, but I had an eye to appreciate what I saw. Many of my first images may not have been in focus or the shutter stayed open too long, but the picture would have a story. |
| I am not sure who coined the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words,” but I see the art in this statement. When I take a photo it is almost like I am writing a poem. When you write a poem you are using words to |
|
| express ideas that may not exist in the tangible world. To do this, you must attempt to capture as much of that idea and express it words that best represent your thought as a vision understandable in another persons mind. |
| Seeing still images like poetry allows me to expand the context for which an image has meaning to me. Much like the ability to express a complex story with the added ability to stretch time and partially recreate |
| a moment of the past. Using imagery of elements that all real tangible existence has long left the present. |
| Some time in early 2003 I got my first digital camera. A Nikon CoolPix 4300 with a 4.1 megapixel CCD. |
|
| With the new found freedom of not needing to go anywhere special or wait for development I began to rediscover my photo passion. I must have taken several thousand images before I upgraded to my current camera in the spring of 2004. |
| A Fuji Finepix S7000 6.2 megapixel SuperCCD with the ability to interpolate up to 12.3 megapixel. This camera has been |
| very reliable and has many great features. My digital image collection is now in the range of 15-20 thousand high resolution images. That would be the equivalent of about 470-625 rolls of film, 32 exposures each. |
